While I rarely advocate using anything cheap, when its comes to a bit set like this I will say it is probably ok. I don’t see a scenario where I would these guys would see frequent use nor use in any high torque applications so getting 33 bits for just over 4 bucks is pretty good deal.

If have you not seen it already, let us introduce to the hottest thing to hit the level scene maybe evar, yeah that’s right I said evar! The CH Hanson Precision Ball Level. Instead of the traditional bubble system, this new level uses an innovative aviation style ball that we found to be much simpler to read and just as accurate as any other level we have owned.

Because the Precision Ball Level can measure in multiple directions, in addition to it services as a level you can employ it to find plumb or other angles and pitches. So not only is it a sweet conversation piece but it is also one of the most useful multi-tasker you can add to your tool bag.

Kobalt SpeedFit System

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

speed

About a year ago, Kobalt (Lowe’s in-house tool brand), decided to rename and repackage the venerable multi-bit screwdriver as the SpeedFit System. In addition to the standard screwdriver bits, other tools including picks, files, an adjustable wrench and sockets were designed and launched to all fit in one universal handle topped with a standard quick change connection.

What initially intrigued me about the SpeedFit product line was its versatility and portability. Any product that can lighten the travel tool bag without compromising functionality is definitely worth a look. That is where the rub lies, the SpeedFit’s functionality. It just is not professional grade. Something that I found surprising, considering its Kobalt pedigree. While a relatively new line of tools, especially when compared to Craftsman, I have found the brand to a worthy competitor when comparing professional/contractor grade durability across other manufacturers.

The SpeedFit lives and in this case dies with its ability to quickly change bits on tools on the go. The problem was, this connection was also the weak spot of the tool. It was not as solid and secure as it should have been, allowing for a little “travel” in the bits and leaving concern of breakage in high torque applications. So for us the promising system was a no go. But we do see merit in it for the typical homeowner or as an emergency car toolkit considering the variety of combinations the system comes in and its reasonable price points. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Bosch Multi-Construction Drill Bits

bit

Having to carry and switch out drill bits for different materials is a pain in the ass and with the release of Bosch’s MC series bits, a thing of the past. Thanks to its tungsten-carbide plating and diamond edged cutting surface the MC bits can go from masonry to wood to ceramic without any performance loss. Sweet.

JEGS Composite Non-Mar Pry Bar Set

no-mar1

Much of the testing that we do is considered destructive. However, there are often times where we need to reuse the same unit for multiple tests. Ideally, we attempt to keep everything in as pristine a condition as possible.

Unfortunately, metal tools can be destructive without even really meaning to be. This non-marring pry bar set by Jegs could be just the solution we need. Being able to quickly and cleanly breakdown evidence for testing or photos is essential, just not always possible. Hopefully, with this set our odds just went up.

Makita Cordless Impact Driver

makita

While we tend to favor Milwaukee for our full size tools and Bosch for the emerging category of performance sub-compacts, that doesn’t mean we are going to ignore the other manufacturers cause that just be silly. Take for instance Makita’s new impact driver. Despite 18v of power, the Makita is still a sleek piece of equipment with great ergonomics including its grip and weight balance. Plus the Lith-Ion battery packs can drive over 100 screws, more than enough to get through most any project. All for a wallet friendly price of about $200.

Tool Band-It Magnetic Arm Band

tool-band

Normally I carry my tools in my pockets or mouth or both depending on what I am doing. That can make for an awkward situation if I am trying to work on a ladder, under a car or anywhere else where I need my hands free. The Tool Band-It Magnetic Arm Band looks a a great solution to my problem.

Attach it to your arm and you are good to go. You slap just about any tool you want on it from pliers to a hammer. What I really see as a great use for it is the ability to keep nails, screws, bolts, drill bits or whatever in easy reach.
