As previously noted, my eyes are extremely sensitive to light, both visible and UV, so I am always on the look out for a good pair of sunglasses. The Randolph Engineering Aviators, look to be a strong contender for my next pair. Designed for the US Military and NASA, they can take a beating. While I will never see combat or walk on the moon, I tend to pretty tough on my glasses between my usually clumsiness and the everyday wear and tear they get out in the field. For years, I have been tempted to pick up a pair of Oakley X-Metals for their purported durability, but the price point is a bit ridiculous at $400 or more. Not so with RE. Pricing starts at just $99 with the polarized setting you back a very reasonable $140 plus you can customize frame size, lens color and material along with frame color and temple style. Sound about perfect to me.

For the past few months, I have been looking for a new pair of sunglasses for this summer. I wanted a pair of wrap arounds that a sporty feel to them that still looked good on my big ole round melon.

As of this morning, I have found my winner with the Lacrosse glasses by Spy Optics. They have a big frame that fits my head nicely but still manages to look pretty sleek. Plus they are polarized for less than $120 bucks. Good Stuff.

The Whaler by Maui Jim

Monday, July 21st, 2008

About year ago, I first heard about Maui Jim’s.  I checked out a few pairs but decided the cost (often $300 or more) was a bit too much.  My opinion has changed.  In February I underwent LASIK surgery so I could ditch my contacts.  One of the side effects of the surgery is increased sensitivity to glare.  I drive a lot.  40,000 miles last year.   A few weeks after the surgery,  I bit the bullet and bought a my first pair of Maui Jim’s.  They won’t be my last either.  The difference was simply stunning.  The glare was gone.  So was my eye fatigue thAT usually popped up after a few hours behind the wheel even before LASIK.  The secret?  All of Jim’s lens are made up of 9 layers of glass with UV protection sandwiched between each layer plus the lenses are polarized.  I never thought could justify spending that much on a pair of sunglasses but now I can’t imagine wearing anything but Maui Jim’s again.  Get a pair, trust me, they are worth it.
